How To Celebrate the Moon Landing This Weekend

You can stream the landing footage or attend one of many events across the U.S.

This year, we celebrate the historic 50th anniversary of the Moon landing, a feat that took countless minds and years of effort to accomplish. As we reflect on the achievement, here's how you can re-watch mankind's epic giant leap.

NASA X on Hulu

If you're already a Hulu subscriber, you can get the NASA X add-on for an additional $5.99/month. According to the site, this program will follow "innovative new technologies and the NASA scientists, researchers, and engineers who are putting them to work for us."

New Hulu subscribers can take advantage of a free trial where you'll be able to see "a live celebration of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11," a replay of the original Moonwalk footage, launches, aircrafts docking to the International Space Station, news conferences, and more.

Tranquility Base in Times Square

This free event will run from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. in NYC's Times Square and will feature a giant mosaic of Neil Armstrong's lunar boot print, educational demonstrations and the chance to meet two former NASA astronauts. There will also be large screens showing the Apollo 11 landing if sitting back and taking it easy is more your style.

National Mall Festival

The nation's capital is celebrating the Moon landing with a festival that will feature hands-on exhibits from NASA, Boeing, LEGO, and more.

News outlets warn visitors to beware of the heatwave we're expecting with the temperature in D.C. set to hit upwards of 100° with heat index of 110°.

An HBO Miniseries

If you want some a dramatized narrative about the Moon landing, HBO's From the Earth to the Moon will sate your appetite. The 1998 miniseries has been remastered for a re-release this week and uses real footage in addition to dramatic reenactments

Space Fest

The American Museum of Natural History in NYC will host Space Fest on Saturday, July 20th in a day-long celebration of the Apollo 11 mission with a "digital recreation of the iconic mission’s flight and landing."

This event is free if you're a member of the museum. If not, you can purchase tickets here.

Discovery Green Festivities

This southern celebration will take place in Houston, Texas, where exhibits from the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center will be on display.

Attendees will be treated to parachute and paratrooper landing demonstrations plus a screening of Apollo 11, the documentary that came out in January 2019. The event is free and will run from 6-10 p.m. at Discovery Green park.

Kennedy Space Center

Florida's Kennedy Space Center is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Moon landing in a big way—Neil Armstrong's Corvette will be on display. Armstrong's wax figure from Madame Tussaud's will also be on display plus, attendees will get to see the world's largest Moon Pie.
