While many people miss the in-theater experience or live game environment, if you’ve come to love staying in and catching a good movie or sporting event from the comfort of home, odds are you’ll want the full surround sound experience. No matter where you’re watching, adding (or simply updating) a surround sound system to round out your home entertainment setup is a no brainer if you really want that immersive experience.

What to Consider

Consider where your home theater is set up and whether or not you want a wired or wireless system. If you live in a small space, you probably don’t need a system with several speakers—a sound bar and subwoofer might be enough. If you have a lot of room in your home theater, consider a six-speaker system for maximizing the use of that space. You should also think about what your budgetary restrictions are and whether features like smart device connectivity and Bluetooth are necessities or not.

How We Selected

We scoured several sites to find which surround sound systems were bestsellers and consistently well-rated by users. We also made sure we included a range of options from budget-friendly to luxe systems and looked for variety in models to meet individual needs. Finally, we considered design and style to bring you the best-performing and best-looking surround sound systems.

Pros
  • Great sound quality
  • Competitively priced
  • Immersive
Cons
  • Can overwhelm small rooms

A winner of the CES Innovation Award, the Nakamichi Shockwafe Ultra 9.2.4 is driven by its Spatial Surround Elevation processing technology. This tech sends the audio to nine channels to give a 360° sound experience. It comes with not one, but two 10-inch subwoofers, a sound bar with six 2.5-inch drivers and two 1-inch tweeters, and four satellite speakers which, combined with Dolby Atmos, truly put you in the center of the action. Even better, you don’t have to worry about wires cluttering up your living room. Of course, all this doesn’t come cheap, but there are plenty of other comparable systems that cost much more.

Best Budget Option

Sony HT-S350 Soundbar & Subwoofer

Pros
  • Great price and value
Cons
  • Dated aesthetics

Sony’s sound bar and wireless subwoofer work together to create easy-to-hear mid and high frequencies and a deep, rumbling bass you can feel. This minimalist system features vocal-enhancing technology to make dialogue and songs crystal clear and easily distinguishable from background noise. Plus, the HT-S350 offers Bluetooth connectivity so you can stream your favorite movies, shows, and music from your phone or tablet. While the sound bar is sleek, the subwoofer may not suit all tastes due to its dated look. Still, it doesn’t get much better than this quality at this price point.

Pros
  • Good sound quality
  • One of the cheapest systems with Dolby Atmos
Cons
  • Doesn’t support AirPlay or Chromecast

As it does with televisions, Vizio offers a lot of value with its home theater systems. This five-channel system features Dolby technologies—Dolby Atmos and DTS:X—usually found on much pricier systems. Of course, there are some concessions that have been made. The two satellite speakers are wired, and for wireless connectivity, it only has Bluetooth. But if you’re primarily going to be using the system while streaming movies on your TV, then it shouldn’t be a problem, and you’ll get an immersive experience at a great price.

Pros
  • Rechargeable wireless satellites
  • Supports Chromecast and AirPlay
Cons

While most wireless systems still require you to plug in the satellite speakers, not so with this JBL five-channel system. Its two satellite speakers are battery-powered and can be recharged by attaching them to the sound bar, which can still operate using virtual surround while they charge. Other features like auto-calibration and Dolby Atmos make this an easy-to-use, great-sounding option.

    Pros
    • Great looking
    • Very reasonably priced
    Cons
    • Requires an A/V receiver

If you already have an A/V receiver and you're looking for a good set of speakers, this five-speaker set from the experts at Klipsch is a good way to go. A few years old, this set used to cost four times as much as it does now, making it a good buy if you don’t have a receiver and want to get one. The subwoofer connects wirelessly at 2.4GHz so you can place it anywhere in the room and get high-quality audio. Not only do these speakers sound great, but if you leave the grills off, the spun copper speaker horns are eye-catching as well.
